Last October on a rocky beach in Maine, I happened upon a group of stacked stone sculptures left behind by an unknown artist. I marveled at the time and patience it must have taken to create these works of art and wondered what type of artist creates such a beautiful yet transient piece of work...
Rock balancing, I learned, is a worldwide art form in which rocks are balanced on top of one another in various positions. There are no aids involved in the balancing, such as wires or supports. The sculptures are created in the place where the rocks are found
I could find no information on rock balancing artists working in the Portland, Maine area, but given the nature of the craggy seashore, I am sure many practitioners abound.
I was fortunate to be able to capture some images of these delicate works of art before the sea reclaimed them. All pictures on my blog are my own and available for purchase should you desire a copy. Email me for more information.
Look for information about my photography website... up and running soon!
Be Well!
